Small intentional actions that push or pull teachers towards innovation is an effective way to bring about a cultural shift. Drawing on the Stanford d schools principles of "hacking for school improvement", this session shares leadership strategies that support teachers to step out of their comfort zone and experience the range of emotions encountered when taking innovative risks. Two projects (digital solutions to litter, gamification) will be shared, showing how these small hacks have led to empowering teachers to leap through the curtain of fear, to let go of the curriculum, and see student centred learning ideas come to action with strong authentic connections to local and wider community. The session will address leadership considerations, resourcing, coaching, community connections, pedagogy, and reflections. It also considers that we need to nurture these mindsets and skills in students as well as teachers in order to create cultures of progressive education.
